AEGIS

AEGIS - The strength in Sisterhood

Five women found themselves at a table filled with food and drinks and unwind while baring their burdens to each other. That night would mark the beginning of an unplanned sisterhood, one that would act as an aegis for the next eighteen months of their lives and beyond.

OYIN - The main character of the book. She is the root of the sisterhood, Oyin is a fierce woman, with little patience for inanities, she is a successful fashion designer, an accomplished Lawyer and women's rights advocate who prides herself as the voice of many vulnerable woman through her law firm - SISTEM where she offers free legal services for the advancement of this cause.Despite being all of this and more, to those closest to her, no achievement beats watching her walk down the aisle before she turns 30.

ELOHOR - Razz, funny, interesting! From afar, these are the adjectives to describe Elohor until you get close and see beneath the jokes which act as a coping mechanism for her. Married with twin boys and a working class mother, Elohor is stuck between proving herself as a real woman who can keep her home and saving herself from her abusive spouse.

AMAKA -  Social, self absorbed, desperate! Amaka has everything going well for her - a great career in media, amazing friends, a supportive spouse and a beautiful marriage but to Amaka, marriage cannot be called beautiful without the cry of a baby to validate her and her marriage, for how useful are you as a woman if you have never flaunted your protruded stomach or have never suckled a baby?

JESSICA - Unapologetic, self aware, free spirited, Outlaw! These describe Jessica perfectly. When she agreed to move to Nigeria for a year strictly for Business, Jessica had no plans of settling down or having children, but sometimes, with friendships, comes duty and sacrifice.

DAMI - Conservative, caring and calm. Despite being the elder sister of Oyin, Dami is the exact opposite with a more conservative and calm approach to situations. Having taken time off to raise her kids, Dami set on a path of self discovery to becoming the woman her younger self dreamt of.

"So" I continued "even though I am not a prostitute and I am wearing a hijab, SISTEM teaches that I have to defend the right of that prostitute who barely has clothes on, not to be raped because nothing stops that same rapist from raping me who is covered up. SISTEM basically says I will defend my sister's rights both when we fight and when we agree, I will defend every woman whether I am a primary beneficiary of her right or not, because the puzzle of womanhood will never be complete until the rights of every woman regardless of her creed, her belief, her skin color, her shape, her religion and race is respected and protected!"  - Oyin, Aegis

Aegis tells the story of friends, each faced with her unique challenge, their different behaviors, reactions and the reason they make the decisions they make. It is a story that at the very core celebrates different types of women in their uniqueness and reinforces the rights of women to be.
